The Lone Star Rally of Canterbury will bring the Brian Green Property Group NZ Rally Championship to Christchurch and North Canterbury on Saturday 31st May and Sunday 1st June. The Finn, driving a Polo R, headed team-mate Sébastien Ogier by 1min 26.9sec. It was Volkswagen’s ninth consecutive WRC victory, breaking the record held by Citroen. Kris Meeke claimed his second podium of the season in a Citroen DS3. The Frenchman completed the four-day event, round five of the FIA World Rally Championship, 5min 54.7sec behind Latvala in third.“Last year I finished on the podium but I couldn’t dream to win here, it’s something special,” said Latvala. “I crashed in Portugal and there was a risk my self-confidence was down. Mercedes driver, Lewis Hamilton finished the FIA Formula One 2014 Spanish Grand Prix in style by securing his maiden victory at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya. Hamilton’s success in Spain today means that the 2008 World Champion has also picked up his fourth consecutive race win of the season. Sprint Cup points leader Jeff Gordon has registered his first race win of the season with victory in Kansas. Gordon, who is celebrating the 20th anniversary since his first win at the Cup level, held off Kevin Harvick over the final laps to secure his 89th career victory taking the chequered flag in the 5-Hour Energy 400. It’s the four-time champion’s first win since Martinsville last autumn and it earned him a place in the record book as the first winner of a night race at the track. “I knew we had a fast race car. We’ve had a fast race car every single week. And that’s just given me so much confidence,” said Gordon. “Kevin was tough. He was so strong. Australian driver Neal Bates has won the Stadium Cars / Ssangyong International Classic Rally of Otago for the second year in succession, driving his Toyota Celica RA40 to a victory of nearly two minutes. Despite nearly rolling his car on stage 10 of the 15 stage event, held to the south of Dunedin, Bates and co-driver, Coral Taylor, were clearly the class of the field, even beating New Zealand’s WRC star, Hayden Paddon, who crashed out of the lead on day one..  Read more >>
 
Richard Mason and Ben Hunt in their Subaru WRX STIs each won a heat of the Otago Rally at the weekend, with Mason taking overall honours on the second round of the National Rally Championship. We spent the first day being hosted around Los Angeles by speedway racer Mick Quin who lives half the year in LA and the other half in NZ. Time in LA is not complete without a visit to the friendly team at Kiwi Shipping. The first round of the 2014 Laird Motorsport & Models Southern Rally Series takes place in conjunction with the DriveSouth Rally Of Otago this weekend.
